Had an incident this summer in a fresh water lake regarding ESD (electro shock drowning, in this case) and we, as boaters, really need to be fully aware of what can happen when our vessels wiring gets screwy (or the marina's wiring!!). Anyway, I saw an item on Facebook the other day that was a yellow floating "detector" of ESD and showed a green light when all was safe but showed a red flashing light and emitted a loud siren if electrical current was detected . . . . . someone (won't say who) threw the paper away and now I can't find it on the Internet so that I can read up on it . . . . anybody seen anything like this?? Thanks for the help. ;)

IMO it's an excellent, easy, visual diagnostic that not only gives an answer, but it starts conversations with others, raising awareness.

Was it at a local lake James? I don't recall hearing about it.

Nope, back home in Indiana where most of my family lives . . . my sister was worried that her pool could have an issue so I suggested one of these units so she'd feel better but couldn't remember where I'd seen it. Don't know much about the actual death . . . sister just told me about it and some reporter mentioned boats and marinas so she was asking me.

For those of you that are cheap "like myself".....a downrigger ball on steel cable hung over the side of the boat and about 4' deep is an excellent conductor. Make sure that there is continuity between the ball and your steel line, you may have to make a small jumper cable with alligator clips in case the ball has an insulator clip between it and the downrigger line. Then hook a multimeter up with the positive lead attached to the steel downrigger line and the negative lead attached to your engine block. This will tell you the voltage in the water.
