Please take a few minutes and enter your information in your BOC member profile........ name, location, boat model, year, engine, stern drive, etc.
This helps us help YOU! :)

I'm thinking that you have the AQ131 engine and the 275 drive. If so, the PDS can be accessed from AFT without the need to remove the engine.

Your PDS (aka spindle) is shown here as SEQ #69.
www.marinepartseurope.com/PentaPictures500/7464.jpg

You will be replacing an industry standard 6206 bearing and a 35x62x7mm TCM or Timken brand single lip seal.

First..... drain the drive gear oil by removing the transmission dip stick and by using a hand-held impact driver on the drain plug.

...... remove the helmet pin and tilt the helmet up and out of your way.
...... loosen the AFT most drive shaft bellows band clamp.
..... remove the rear shift mechanism cover and remove the "clevis pin" from the vertical linkage rod.
..... remove the two vertical cap screws and the two vertical 9/16" hex head nuts.
...... the transmission should now be free to lift up, turn sideways, and be carefully removed AFT.

NOTE: watch out for the shims that will be between the bottom of the transmission bearing retainer and within the bore of the Intermediate housing.
Oil film will cause these to stick to the retainer where they may fall from later on. DO NOT loose any of these shims!

OK.... next you'll need to modify a long needle-nose pliers. NOT a standard needle nose pliers...... a LOOOOONG needle nose.
images.prod.meredith.com/product/957dfe7...h-needle-nose-pliers

Grind the tips into a round shape that will fit into the snap ring eyelets.
Tweak the tips inward a bit as to prevent them from slipping out of the snap ring eyelets.

Next....... reach into the flywheel cover snout (the PDS bore) and remove the seal.
You may need to punch a tool into it and twist it out.... or, run a sheet metal screw into it, and pull it out by the screw head.
Either way..... remove it!

Once the seal is out of your way, the two large expansion type snap rings will be visible.
Using the modified pliers, reach in and remove both of them.

Wrap something protective around the PDS splines..... brass or copper shim stock works well.
Grab the PDS with a giant vise grip pliers and pull AFT.

If not corroded, it and the 6206 bearing will come out.

When going back together, be sure to:
...... grease the PDS Borg Warner splines and the pilot nose.
...... just prior to installing the new 35x62x7mm seal, pump grease into the Flywheel Cover grease port until you see it exit the new 6206 ball cage!
...... install the new seal in the Non-Conventional direction...... (seal lip and tension spring facing AFT..... not FWD)

NOTE: the AFT most snap ring stops the 35x62x7mm seal..... in other words, the seal installs LAST after both snap rings have been installed!

In my image here, I show a later style GM V-8 single bearing PDS with a pilot nose.
Yours will also be a single bearing PDS w/ pilot nose.

I put this image together for a member who's PDS B/W splines had rusted to the B/W drive coupler splines.
You should be able to see how the PDS pilot nose interfaces with the engine crankshaft.

2850B: I read elsewhere that for the AQ 131a, the front seal (between the flywheel housing and the 6206) is not the same size as the aft seal. I believe it is a STEFA CB 35x55x10 mm. Could you confirm this please? Thanks!

For the in-line 4 and 6 cylinder engines, that is correct!

I believe it is a STEFA CB 35x55x10 mm. Could you confirm this please?
Yes....., STEFA was the OEM brand for years and years.
As for the size, that does sound correct.
However, since you will not need to remove the engine, you will not have easy access to this seal.
That's why I mentioned the one AFT seal only.

Now, if you can build a tool that would reach in and allow you to pull the 55mm seal AFT and out, you may be able to install a replacement 55mm seal.

Keep in mind that either of these seals will install with the lip and tension spring facing AFT!

Thanks!

My parts should be here soon and am looking forward to doing the job. One question 2850B why is the aft grease seal installed backwards? I'm sure you have a valid reason, I just can't twig this one. Thanks and have a great weekend.
