Anyone know what part number a prop bearing carrier/housing would be on a VP290A DP (1.78/1)
Think I've buggered mine up by not installing the thrust washer before the forward prop (long story)
I can't find the info I need (or am looking in the wrong places)
Are any other DP housings the same

Thanks Amadaies, I looked at that site earlier but didn't see the part numbers
They practically jumped off the screen when I just looked again :woohoo:
Do you know if all the 290 DP drives use the same housing, I can get a good used one over here for £120 but don't know if it;s definitely going to fit and would the original part number be stamped on it

I'll bet that this is actually a fairly short story! :blush:
Don't feel too badly....... you are not alone. I have repaired several of these for the exact same reason.
The good news is (if you can call this "good news"), is that you will never make this mistake again!

There were some changes made re; shim location shortly after the early Duo Props.
I'm thinking that p/n 3857097 is correct as it shows up for several models and gear ratios.


OK...... note that this is NOT a simple R&R part!
None of these housing are machined identically, of which means that we cannot simply pull one out, and install another one.

You have several options:

a..... by the book...... take the lower gear unit in to a qualified AQ series technician for the proper re-shimming and set-up.
The carrier controls the pre-load of the FWD prop gear bearings (2 of them).
This may require up to 3 or 4 hours shop time.

b.... un-orthodox method...... Remove the bearing race from the bad carrier and inventory the shims.
Take the both the old and the new prop shaft bearing carrier to a machinist and have him carefully measure the X to Y dimensions of both carriers.
Once he understands the function of this part and how the bearing race pre-load controls the gear contact, he should be able to do the math and suggest what shim changes are necessary.

Thanks for detailed reply Rick, I was hoping to do it myself but maybe not now
I only realised something was up after one of the anode screws came loose and I heard a brief grinding noise (it was the screw rubbing against the prop hub)
When I checked I saw that the prop hub had shortened by an inch or so and the bearing carrier end had become rounded :blush:
What else would I need to change at the same time, seals, bearings?

Are you certain that the prop shaft bearing carrier is beyond use?
Could it be machined down for a custom made spacer ring (TIG welded in place) and then bored to dimension for the AFT seal fit?

As for other parts..... new O-rings and new seals for sure.
