I received a flywheel to install on new engine,it had 19, 1/2" holes drilled in it,the one on the engine I am replacing has no holes drilled in it,is this a concern for balance?

Speak with your local machine shop SBC specialist and ask this question.

If I recall, some 5.0Ls were additionally balanced via the flywheel.
The 5.7L was not!

Also, there is a difference in the rear crankshaft flange between year models.
Early (pre '87) require the large flange style, whereas the later ('87 and post '87) require the smaller flange style.
This is due to the 2 pc seal -vs- the 1 pc seal.

Yes 19 1/2 holes is a concern for balance If your engine is internally balanced. You can tell by the single piece rear main seal holder, and sometimes the four bolt valve covers, if your engine has an aluminum holder for a regular looking lip seal at the rear main you definitely have the internally balanced engine and you need to use the proper flywheel. I think you can google the part numbers to check and make sure you have the right one.

Same series engine 5.0l and 5.7l the flywheel should have changed over.

Sounds like you may have different series engines .

For the Mercruiser you will need the 168 tooth ring gear flywheel.
Depending on the drive coupler style, the 153 tooth can be made to work but you would need to change starter motors.

What year is the new/replacement SBC 5.7L engine?
What year SBC 5.0L engine is the replacement flywheel being taken from?

As for the holes...... this may help explain.
Due to these being a casting, the final balancing hole count, as well as the depth of these holes, will vary from flywheel to flywheel.
