We kept hearing this might happen but it sure looks like as of July 2018 Pot will be legal across Canada. www.montrealgazette.com/news/canadian+fe.../13299878/story.html

Now I only need to find the next "McDonalds" of pot distribution to invest in, as this will be big if it goes private.

If it was still the 70's then I might agree. But it's not and todays pot is not the same high. It's being allowed and pushed for a political agenda.

This is rather different as the entire country will go legal pot, not a region, province or state. I believe the only other country to do so is Uruguay.

Minnesota went the scientific route and chose to legalize medical marijuana. For over a year they pushed the benefits to those who needed the medical high for several different types of illness. We legalized it, built a new facility and after one year the price of the byproduct went up three times what they said it would be and the less fortunate couldn't afford it. That's big business and government for you.
I personally would rather have the litterbugs throw a roach or two in my ditch instead of the weekend beer cans I have to pick up in order to cut the grass.
One another note I cant see how the Gov. is trying to shut down the tobacco industry but turn around and promote smoking Mary Jane.

Pot is now leagal for sale in several states (including mine of Alaska)

I think its fantastic!

We get to tax trade that has been happening all along anyway. People that consume the substance get a quality product tat has been tested for impurities, mld, etc..., Orgainzed crime has lost a funding source. People that work in the industry get all the "benefits" of a real job.

And....

Drum roll here...

Law enforcement can dedicate its resources to crimes that really matter!!!

I don't know what is happening where you are, but here in WA, that's not quite the case.

Per RCW 69.50.535 and WAC 314-55-089, all retail licensees are required to remit to the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) an excise tax of 37 percent on all taxable sales of marijuana, marijuana concentrates, useable marijuana, and marijuana-infused products.

The government has taxed the industry so severely, the black market is still alive and thriving. However, for those of you who imbibe (which I do not), you will be happy to know that since made legal, the market has been flooded, making the prices drop by ½.

But if you think the black market has taken a hit, ....... Late last year, Seattle Weekly did an article on it.

The big problem now, is that because users can carry a quantity on their person where they couldn't before, there is no 'cooperation agreement' to be reached to lead the police to the illegal sources. Moreover, home growers producing 1lb/mo can sell it without the taxes and the logistical hassle. This means the police's job is actually tougher than before legalization. This also means, that unless the powers that be decide to turn a blind eye to the illegal sources for pot, the income generated through taxation is likely close to the added expense of managing the industry, both legal and illegal.

The big difference achieved from the legalization of pot is that we finally have more space in detention facilities and jails for the more serious criminals. Other than that - which is a big one - I consider the income garnered from it being sold legally to be a total wash.

As to Canada legalizing it, being a dual citizen, a few people I know up there will be happy about it, but most are like me and think that other than the medicinally, it is a blight on society. Nothing worse than attempting a simple conversation with someone who is stoned out of their mind. Then again, I detest drunks for the same reason.

That's my 2 cents.

Thats simple

States rights. Every state has the right to pass the laws they want in their state.

Pot was made illegal in 1937. Pretty much all states quickly followed with their own laws.

Back then few people smoked pot, or marijuana products. Marijuana was not a widely "abused" substance in America.

The reason marijuana was made illegal was due to lobbying by a company called DUPONT, and the efforts of a gentleman named William Randoph Hearst. The problem is Dupont had invented a new fiber called NYLON and wanted to eliminate the competing fiber of the day which was HEMP. Hearst was in the logging and newspaper business. He wanted to promote the making of paper from trees, instead of hemp. So... He used his newspapers to run Ads and editorials demonizing marijuana. In fact he helped create a "problem" and banning hemp production was the solution.

Illegalizing marijuana overnight killed the hemp industry, removing the competition, with nylon becoming the dominant fiber. It also shifted paper production away from hemp to wood products, adding to the Hearst fortune.

Now you kow the rest f the story :)

Do the plants bear seeds where you can just grow your own without buying a plant?

Don it really has nothing to do with tax. The bill allows each household to grow 4 plants at home. There is no tax on the pot you grow. The government will sell it in stores and make a profit on the pot and tax it just like booze and smokes.

Uruguay is a country the size and population of Oklahoma, so it's much easier than Canada. But still havent been implemented there, really.

Spain also legalized sale, possession and cultivation. And more recently, South African courts declared ok to cultivate and use your own pot, but no sales.

In practice, people arent simply divided in drunks vs sobers. Most of adults enjoy alcohol without getting drunk "out of their mind", and are functional citizens all around you. Same as pot.

Last I saw it was 75.00 for 3 plants. and I would assume they seed if you let them go long enough, plants can live like 10 years if not harvested

www.adn.com/alaska-marijuana/2016/12/09/...nly-plants-for-sale/

"They cost $73.50 for three plants, including Anchorage's 5 percent sales tax. Gilmer's total came to $147. Thorp put them in black, child-resistant packages.

Gilmer wanted to get clones so he could avoid paying hundreds of dollars for an ounce, he said. "It's outrageous," Gilmer said of commercial prices."
